Personal Inspirations

Seniors rule
A Review
By Hannah Pittard

The painting department senior show is an opportunity for students to test their talent, their vision and their voice. Although a handful of the pieces in this year’s show seem uncertain of themselves — relying on heavy-handed political and social messages to carry them — the majority of the pieces prove truly fine examples of the confident work from SCAD’s painting department.

More than 30 students are involved with this year’s show, “Personal Inspirations,” for which students were asked to submit four pieces each with an artist’s statement relating to the particular works. Curated by SCAD professors Michael Brown, Josh Yu and Linda Cohn, the show’s title allowed the subject of the exhibition to remain open to the myriad personal visions and themes of the students.

The senior show is an especially unique group exhibition in that almost every student has at least two pieces on display — allowing audiences to better grasp an individual’s range of skill. Work varies from oil on canvas to lipstick on silver souvenir spoons. Standouts include Anthony Antonellis’ untitled acrylic perspective of a skyscraper; Meghan A. Dorand’s “bBllaaa…ggg” and “Impression,” both of which play with facial movement; Justin Meyers’ “Goldbox” and “Years of Conversation,” which hint at the artist’s possible obsession with cigarettes; Heath Montgomery’s “Duality;” Kishan Munroe’s “The Fruits of Modernization’s Exposure,” whose title is both literal and figurative; Dara Lindsey Shady’s “Insert Head Here” that boasts a lithograph of dress patterns with holes where heads should be; and David Sterner’s “Duplicity.”

Three awards will be given and announced at the reception during Open Studio Night, April 12, 5-8 p.m., at Alexander Hall. Open Studio Night is sponsored by the painting department and includes an exhibition of varied works, as well as a chance to view students at work in their studios. Special features include one-night installations, demonstrations of painting techniques, music and refreshments. The evening also will highlight work by Working Class, an interdisciplinary project designed to give students practical artistic experience before they graduate.

“Personal Inspirations” is on display at Alexander Hall Gallery, 668 Indian St., through April 14.

Showcase showdown

A Review
By Hannah Pittard

The Senior Showcase features the outstanding work by students graduating in 2003. The annual exhibition is curated by the exhibitions department and proves an example of the fine work produced yearly by SCAD students. This year’s exhibition includes work in a variety of media from students majoring in fashion, painting, illustration, furniture, metals and jewelry, fibers, sequential art, photography, architecture and graphic and interior design.

“We have it [the show] to showcase the best works that are being produced by graduating seniors,” said Joanne Duran, assistant curator. “Not all majors are represented. It is intended to showcase the highest quality work on campus.”

Work by Erica Anderberg, Anthony Antonellis, Donovan Beeson, Casey Crain, Erin Crandall, Githa Dunker, Amy Greer, Hey-Jeong Lee, Andrew Loder, Jodi Lundin, Jason Thomas Meehan, Luciana Melo, Lonnie Morris, Kishan Munroe, Will O’Donnell, Abigail Perkins, Kadie Renner, Liisa Ruhkala, Claire Sanchez, Corinne Saylor, Dara Lindsey Shady, Jane Shepherd, Leila Singleton, Maria Christina Stacey, Meredith Sutton, Ian Swanson, Stacia Tuzik and Christopher M. White will be on display.

The Senior Showcase is on display at Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., through July 1. The exhibition will be featured at SCAD’s monthly gallery hop, June 6, 5-7 p.m.
